Avid has announced Pro Tools | Carbon, an AVB-connected, hybrid DSP and native audio interface. Pro Tools | Carbon is a new breed of audio interface—built to capture brilliance. It’s a hybrid audio production system that features incredible sound quality and combines the power of your native CPU with onboard HDX DSP acceleration.

The interface features 25 inputs: eight mic pre/line in, 16 channels of ADAT optical, Talkback mic, four mic pres with variable impedance (for inputs 5/6/7/8), two instrument inputs (1&2) with variable impedance, and the Talkback mic on front panel, which appears in the Pro Tools IO setup. There are also 34 outputs: eight line outs, studio monitor outputs, 16 channels of ADAT optical, and four stereo headphone outs.

Who is Carbon For?

With eight mic pres, two dedicated GTR/instr inputs with variable Z, and 16 inputs via ADAT optical format, recording bands or intricate setups is easy and flexible with 24 simultaneous inputs. Carbon comes with a one-year subscription license of Pro Tools software, and with the hybrid DSP workflow, multitrack recording sessions with near-zero latency is no longer the exclusive domain of Pro Tools Ultimate HDX systems.

AVB: Audio Video Bridging

AVB (Audio Video Bridging) is an extension to the Ethernet standard, designed to provide guaranteed quality of service, which means that audio latency in a given AVB system is consistent. AVB allows you to create a single network for audio, video, and control data, using an AVB-compatible
switch. AVB is compatible with AES67, but is not directly compatible with Dante or Ravenna. Carbon uses a direct connection to the computer Ethernet port for lowest possible latency values. Many other audio devices and manufacturers use AVB, including Avid’s own live console, the S6L series.

Comes with Plug-Ins

Carbon comes with 115 AAX plugins, including UVI Falcon, Avid Complete Plugin bundle, and HEAT. Additional 3rd party plugins that come with Carbon (with permanent licenses) include Arturia Rev PLATE -140, Brainworx: bx_console N, Brainworx: bx_rockrack, Brainworx: bx_masterdesk, Brainworx: Purple Audio MC77, Embody Immerse Virtual Studio, McDSP 6050 Ultimate Channel Strip HD, Native Instruments Vintage Organs, and UVI Model D Grand Piano.
